References

References are the basis of performance evaluations and provide clarity by assessing past job performance as an indicator of future performance and past behavior as an indicator of future behavior.  The reference questions are presented as open ended so that full and meaningful answers are encouraged.

Supervisory References evaluate the applicant’s performance on the job as experienced by her/his current and/or previous supervisor(s). The many characteristics evaluated by this process represent a valuable indicator of future performance.

 Peer/Professional References provide information on the applicant’s performance as experienced by colleagues who have observed the applicant on the job or in a business setting. These references are obtained from peers, preceptors and past supervisors who are able to comment on the applicant job skills and knowledge. They exclude comments from family and friends.

 Executive References requested for administrative positions provide information on the applicant’s character, integrity and leadership ability.

 For all positions the following attributes / characteristics are discussed with the reference provider:

  • Communication skills
  • Ability to work with others
  • Service relations attitude
  • Quality of work / Work performance
  • Dependability
  • Motivation / Energy level
  • Punctuality / Attendance
  • Degree of supervision required
  • Strengths
  • Integrity /Work ethic

 A supervisory reference provider is also asked to confirm the following employment data:

  • Position held
  • Reason for leaving
  • Counseling / Disciplinary actions
  • Dates of employment
  • Eligibility for rehire

An executive reference provider is also asked the following:

  • Leadership ability
  • Management style
  • Conflict management
